Which role does craftsmanship play in your personal life?

As a concert pianist, craftsmanship plays a pivotal role in my life. Craftsmanship, in my view, is not limited to the manual skills involved in making or playing an instrument but extends to the dedication, precision, and artistry required to perform at the highest level. Every performance is a blend of technical mastery and emotional expression, both of which require a deep commitment to the craft of piano playing.

Which crafts sector fascinates you the most?

The crafts sector that fascinates me the most is instrument making, particularly the craftsmanship behind creating pianos and as a Bösendorfer Artist of over 20 years, of course Bösendorfer pianos in particular. The meticulous attention to detail, the selection of materials, and the skillful assembly that goes into crafting a high-quality piano are truly remarkable. Understanding the intricacies of how my instrument is made enhances my appreciation for its capabilities and inspires me to push my own boundaries as a musician.

Do you believe in a future of craftsmanship? What could it look like?

As a concert pianist, the mastery of my instrument requires both a deep respect for the past and a fearless embrace for the future. I firmly believe in a future of craftsmanship. As technology continues to advance, there is a unique opportunity to blend traditional techniques with modern innovations. This could lead to new ways of crafting instruments that maintain their timeless qualities while incorporating contemporary advancements for improved sound, durability, and playability. The future of craftsmanship could see a resurgence in appreciation for handmade, bespoke items, as people seek authenticity and uniqueness in a mass-produced world.

Tradition or innovation - what do you consider more important?

When it comes to tradition versus innovation, I consider both to be equally important. Tradition provides a foundation of tried-and-true techniques and a rich heritage of knowledge passed down through generations. Innovation, on the other hand, drives progress and allows for new creative expressions and advancements. In my playing, I strive to honor the traditional techniques and repertoire of classical music while also embracing innovative, authentic interpretations, collaborating with contemporary composers and curating performances where blending different form of arts are my heart projects.

The balance of tradition, innovation paired with craftmanship keeps the art form dynamic and always evolving.
